Coronavirus India News Live, Covid-19 Cases in India State-Wise Live Updates: Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a crucial meeting this (Friday) morning with the council of ministers to discuss ways to tackle the resurge of Coronavirus infections. Earlier this month, Modi had held separate meetings with state chief ministers, vaccine manufacturers, and medical oxygen producers.
India has been reporting over 3 lakh coronavirus cases per day for more than a week now. According to the Union Health Ministry data, India yesterday saw a record single-day surge of 3,79,257 new coronavirus infections, pushing the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 1,83,76,524, while active cases crossed the 30-lakh mark. Many states/UTs have imposed restrictions like curfew and lockdown in order to limit the spread of the second wave of coronavirus infections. Measures like closing schools and educational institutes, strict action against mask indiscipline, ban on rallies, curb on social gatherings are also in place.
As the Covid-19 surge continues, India is set to open vaccination for citizens above 18 years from May 1, with an aim to widen the drive to a larger and younger population. However, phase 3 of the vaccination drive may see a slow start with many states/UTs complaining of a shortage in vaccine supply.
Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain yesterday said the national capital has not enough vaccine supply for the vaccination drive for 18-plus years. It may take 3-4 months to cover all people in the national capital. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a meeting on Thursday regarding the third phase of the vaccination drive. “Had a meeting with the officials on vaccination drive in Delhi… prepared a plan to vaccinate all above 18 years in the next 3 months. We will set up vaccination centres on a large scale. All eligible people must come forward to get vaccinated,” Kejriwal said after the meeting. Maharashtra Chief Minister also a held meeting on Covid-19 vaccination yesterday. In Uttar Pradesh, the rollout will be a ceremonial one. States like Odisha, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab and Andhra may not begin the drive on May 1.

In the meanwhile, Maharashtra government has extended the current Covid19 restrictions till May 15. Uttar Pradesh has increased the duration of weekend lockdown by 24 hours.

Coronavirus in India Live News: CIDCO to develop COVID care centres in Mumbai, Panvel
Town planning agency CIDCO will set up COVID care centres in Kanjurmarg in Mumbai and Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai to tackle a surge in cases, an official said on Friday. The state-run City and Industrial Development Corporation said the Kanjurmarg facility will have 2,000 beds, comprising 1,400 oxygenated, 400 non-oxygenated and 200 ICU beds, and the one at Kalamboli will have 800 beds, of which 690 will be oxygenated and 110 would be ICU beds. Cantt board hospitals in Pune, Kirkee, Deolali now dedicated COVID facilities
The hospitals run by the cantonment boards in Maharashtra's Pune, Kirkee and Deolali with a total of 304 beds have been dedicated for the treatment of COVID-19 patients, the Defence Ministry said on Friday. "The cantonment boards' hospitals at Pune, Kirkee and Deolali with 304 beds have been designated as dedicated COVID hospitals," the ministry's statement said. A dedicated COVID health centre at Dehuroad is ready and would become functional soon, while an ICU (intensive care unit) facility with six beds is being set up at the general hospital in Kirkee, it added. Oxygen support is available in 37 cantonment boards and they have a stock of 658 cylinders currently, as per the statement. (PTI)

The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday said it will start the first phase of vaccination for the 18-44 age group from Saturday in seven districts that have more than 9,000 active COVID-19 cases. "From May 1, vaccination for people between 18-44 years will also start. In the first phase, which will be extended to other cities also, the government will start the vaccination in seven districts that have more than 9,000 active cases," Additional Chief Secretary, Health, Amit Mohan Prasad said. The COVID-19 vaccination drive will start in Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Meerut and Bareilly, he said. (PTI)

Agri-science firm FMC India on Friday said it will donate seven Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants to hospitals in five states, including Delhi/NCR. The other four states are Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, it said in a statement. "To help meet some of the urgent demand for oxygen at area hospitals, FMC India will contribute seven PSA plants to support urgent patient care and save precious lives," FMC India President Pramod Thota said. The installation of PSA plants at these hospitals will enable a continued supply of oxygen, without the challenges of transportation logistics, it added. (PTI)

Coronavirus in India Live News: Govt permits import of oxygen concentrators bought through post, courier for personal use
The government on Friday said it has included import of oxygen concentrators for personal use, purchased from e-commerce portals through post or courier, in the list of exempted categories, where customs clearance is sought as gifts, amid surge in COVID-19 cases in the country. The exemption for oxygen concentrators is allowed only for a period till July 31, 2021, for personal use, according to a notification of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). An oxygen concentrator is a medical device that concentrates oxygen from ambient air. It is in high demand due to increasing COVID-19 cases in the country. These concentrators capture and filter the air, unlike oxygen cylinders which can only store a fixed amount of oxygen. (PTI)

The Centre on Friday said it has asked the states to treat the available oxygen as a critical commodity and undertake an oxygen-consumption audit at all hospitals, including private ones, amid a shortage of the life-saving gas in several parts of the country. Addressing a press conference, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Lav Agrawal said from the start of the pandemic, the government had identified oxygen-supported beds as major clinical interventions." He said the government had procured 1,02,400 oxygen cylinders at the national level in April-May 2020 and distributed those among the states. "We have requested the states to treat the available oxygen as a critical commodity and also to ensure a rational use of oxygen," Agrawal said. (PTI)

Five people have been arrested for allegedly making forged COVID-19 test reports in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar, police said on Friday. The accused have been identified as Pragyanand Sharma (24), Himanshu Sharma (24), doctor Manish Kumar (32), Satender (26) and Nikhil (22), they said. On Thursday, a PCR call was received at the Malviya Nagar Police Station saying that some persons at Genestrings Lab, Malviya Nagar, were making fake coronavirus test reports, police said. According to complainant Vipul Saini, a resident of Khirki Village, he along with 45 of his relatives gave samples for COVID-19 testing to Himanshu and Pragyanand. On Sunday, Rishab Shukla, a friend of Saini, also gave his sample for testing to the accused duo. The test reports stated that Shukla was COVID-19 positive, but he did not have any symptoms. (PTI)

Ruling out a complete lockdown for now, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday directed deputy commissioners of the state's six worst-affected districts to further tighten the micro-containment strategy and ensure more testing to slow the spread of coronavirus. Lockdown is not a solution as it will lead to exodus of the labourers and force them to go to states with even lesser medical facilities, he said. Singh directed the district administrations to enforce restrictions strictly and to stop dine-in facility in all high positivity areas, with COVID-19 testing of staff in restaurants by the health department. The Indian Air Force (IAF) airlifted eight oxygen tankers from Singapore to the Panagarh airbase in West Bengal on Friday, said an official statement. India is struggling with the second wave of coronavirus infection as hospitals in several states are reeling under a shortage of oxygen and beds. "Two C-17 aircraft are airlifting eight oxygen tankers from Singapore to Panagarh. The task is in progress," the statement noted. The IAF is also conducting multiple domestic flights to transport oxygen tankers and oxygen plant equipment within the country. It said two oxygen tankers each were taken from Chandigarh to Bhubaneswar, from Agra to Ranchi, Gwalior to Raipur, Indore to Surat and from Chandigarh to Ranchi, and one from Vadodara to Ranchi on Friday. Vaccination for 18-45 age group to start in 10 districts of Gujarat from tomorrow
Vaccination against COVID-19 for 18-45 age group will start from May 1 in 10 districts of Gujarat which are affected most by the pandemic, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said on Friday. The state would be receiving three lakh vaccine doses by evening, he said. Earlier, the government had said there could be a delay as new stocks had not arrived. The districts where vaccination for those above 18 years of age will start from May 1 are Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Kutch, Mehsana, Bharuch and Gandhinagar, Rupani said in a video message. Coronavirus in India Live News: Antiviral drug 'Clevira' repurposed for treating mild to moderate COVID-19 patients
Clevira, a drug primarily developed to treat dengue, has been repurposed as supportive treatment for mild to moderate COVID-19 cases, its manufacturer Apex Laboratories Private Limited said on Friday. The drug is effective when taken orally and the dosage is one tablet twice daily after food for 14 days. The drug has also proved to be safe on liver and kidney parameters, it said. "Clevira, an antiviral formulation, has received regulatory approval as a supportive treatment for mild to moderate COVID-19 cases," the Chennai-based pharmaceutical company said. (PTI)

The Tripura government has sounded an alert after the double mutant strain of coronavirus and those of Britain and African variants were found in the state, officials said on Friday. The state government has decided to hold full-fledged virus tests for passengers entering the state via airways, trains and roadways and quarantine the infected amon them, the officials said. HSBC India on Friday pledged financial support of around Rs 75 crore (USD 10 million) for the ongoing COVID-19 relief efforts in the country. This financial support will be provided through on-ground non-profits and development agencies in India this year, focused specifically on frontline warriors and marginalised communities at large, HSBC India said in a release. Out of the 71 juveniles lodged at Ambala Observation Home, 31 have tested positive for COVID-19, officials said on Friday. On Wednesday, some children showed COVID-like symptoms, following which the health department conducted tests, Civil surgeon Kuldeep Singh told reporters. "As per the report that came out today (Friday), 31 juveniles were found corona positive. They have been kept in isolation," he said. A record single-day 332 COVID-19 deaths were reported in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, pushing the fatality count in the state to 12,570, while the total number of cases mounted to 12,52,324 with 34,626 more people testing positive for the disease. The active cases in the state now stand at 3,10,783 So far, 9,28,971 patients have recuperated from COVID-19 in the state, Additional Chief Secretary Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters More than 2.44 lakh samples were tested for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, which included over 1.08 lakh RTPCR tests, taking the total number of samples tested so far in the state to over 4.07 crore, the highest in the country, Prasad said. The Maharashtra government on Friday announced that it would take back COVID-19 vaccines from private hospitals and administer these doses to people through state-run health centres only. State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said the government has decided to do so it as per the Centre's orders. "The Maharashtra government is going to take back the vaccines given to private hospitals for the inoculation drive as per the Centre's orders. Coronavirus in India Live News: 1,195 new COVID-19 cases, 12 deaths in Puducherry
The COVID-19 tally in the Union Territory of Puducherry rose to 58,622 on Friday with the addition of 1,195 fresh cases, while 12 deaths pushed the toll to 805, the health department said. A total of 6,451 samples were tested in the last 24 hours ending at 10 AM, taking the cumulative number of specimens examined so far to 7.96 lakh, Health and Family Welfare Services Director S Mohan Kumar said in a release. There were 9,519 active cases after the recovery of 654 patients during this period. In all, 48,298 people have recovered from the disease so far in the union territory. (PTI)

Considering the spike in COVID-19 cases, the Goa government on Friday converted an examination hall at the Goa Medical College and Hospital near here into a 150-bed coronavirus treatment facility. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and state Health Minister Vishwajit Rane inspected the facility, which is taking shape in a record period of time. Speaking to reporters, Sawant said, "This will be a ward with 150 beds, equipped with oxygen. The facility will be ready by evening." Apart from this, 300-bed facility in the GMCH complex will be ready in the next four days, he said. (PTI)

The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has launched a helpline number to address the needs of those children who have been left orphaned during the COVID-19 pandemic, a statement said on Friday. The number (+91 9311551393) will also address the concerns of those children whose parents are hospitalised or who are facing any other distress, it added. A panel of counsellors is being constituted to address the anxiety, loneliness and trauma of the children in such situations. DCPCR chairman Anurag Kundu will keep a close watch and ensure that the issues raised by the callers are addressed within 24 hours, the statement said. "Children are the most vulnerable in these testing times as they remain dependent on others to provide for them. The panel is receiving numerous cases wherein a child has lost all sources of support and is in need of immediate care. The commission is committed to resolving all such cases in less than 24 hours," Kundu said. (PTI)

Coronavirus in India Live News: Gehlot urges Centre to rush 201 metric tonnes of medical oxygen to Rajasthan
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday urged the Centre to send 201 metric tonnes of medical oxygen on an emergency basis to the state to help it deal with the crisis arising out of the raging coronavirus pandemic. He said the state government needed 466 metric tonnes of medical oxygen for those under treatment for COVID-19, but has only 265 metric tonnes in its stock. "Today, there is a shortage of about 201 metric tonnes of oxygen in Rajasthan. The number of cases of infection in the state constitutes 5 % of the total cases in the country but oxygen allocation is just 1.6%. The state will require a total of 550 metric tonnes of oxygen within a week. Therefore, there is another request for the Central Government that 201 metric tonnes of oxygen be allocated to the state today as an emergency," Gehlot tweeted. (PTI)

Coronavirus in India Live News: Meghalaya urges Centre to provide Rs 120cr fund for 3rd phase of COVID vaccination
The Meghalaya government has requested the Centre to provide a fund of Rs 120 crore to inoculate people aged between 18 and 44 years in the third phase of the vaccination programme and tackle the second wave of COVID-19 effectively, a minister said on Friday. The northeastern state requires 30 lakh doses of vaccines for the third phase of the immunisation programme, which will start from May 1, Health Minister Alexander Laloo Hek said. "We have written a letter to the Centre, requesting it to provide a financial assistance of Rs 120 crore to complete the inoculation drive for people in the 18-44 years age group and manage the raging second wave of COVID-19 effectively," he said. Take steps to reduce cost of COVID-19 treatment: Kerala HC to govt
Observing that the COVID-19 situation in Kerala is serious, the Kerala High Court on Friday directed the State government to take steps to cut the cost of treatment for the virus at private hospitals. The court gave this direction while considering a plea seeking a directive to introduce affordable universal rates for COVID-19 treatment. Expressing concern over exorbitant amounts charged by the private hospitals, the court directed the government to discuss the matter with the managements of the hospitals and inform its decision to the court by next Tuesday. Coronavirus in India Live News: Bihar Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Singh dies of COVID
Bihar Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Singh died of COVID on Friday in a private hospital here. Singh who had tested positive recently was undergoing treatment at Paras hospital where he died Friday, hospital director Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai told PTI. He was appointed as the Chief Secretary after retirement of his predecessor Deepak Kumar on February 28. A 1985 batch IAS officer, Singh was slated to retire in August end. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar paid rich tributes to the departed bureaucrat. The CM got information about his death during a meeting of the state cabinet. (PTI)
