Treadstone Plot: What is it about?
‘Treadstone’ traces the origins of the CIA’s Operation: Treadstone, which finally leads to the creation of Jason Bourne. If you have read the Bourne novels by Robert Ludlum and watched the successful movie series based on the books, you might know that Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is an unstoppable soldier suffering from amnesia. This whole saga begins with Operation: Treadstone, which is finally deactivated in ‘The Bourne Identity’. And ‘Treadstone’ is set as a prequel series to the events that are shown in the popular movie franchise.
The story explores the genesis and current actions of this CIA black ops program, a covert software that implements a certain behavior-modification protocol to transform recruits into assassins with superhuman abilities.
An action-packed thriller, ‘Treadstone’ takes us to various locations across the globe — from D.C. to Berlin, Russia, North Korea, and Paris, and multiple other regions. Across the episodes, the agents, who are unaware of their origins as Treadstone members, come together as allies and enemies — in order to tackle an international conspiracy. We do know that Jason Bourne turns against Treadstone in order to claim his freedom. And the films’ series version seems to embrace the same trope, with many of the agents-turned-assassins taking up arms against their CIA masters.
Season 1 follows these different agents across the planet after they are ‘mysteriously awakened’ to carry out their dangerous missions. When Levine sets off to put an end to Yuri’s dangerous mission of handing over a nuclear warhead to Colonel Shin, Agent Matt Edwards is looking for global support to dig deeper into the operations of Treadstone Even the Cicadas get involved. Tara Coleman from the Cicada also wants to stop Yuri, and Levine plans to attack Yuri’s place Cyprus. Although the warhead is secured, Yuri flees.
Meanwhile, Doug McKenna is on his own mission of killing a man who is hindering mining in the country. He fails in his goal but convinces the CIA into thinking that he was successful. Agent Edwards meets Van Roon in Amsterdam and seeks Tara’s help in destroying Treadstone.
As you can see, season 1 does not close off all the storylines and instead, sets up the stage for season 2 — where we expect many of these loose threads to finally reach their conclusions.
‘Treadstone’ brings in multiple elements that relive our memories of the Bourne universe. It packs in solid action sequences, a stellar soundtrack, and quick, deadly story arcs. So, if you are a fan of the original movie franchise, we would recommend you to give it a try, at least once!
Treadstone Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Treadstone’ season 1 premiered on October 15, 2019, on the USA Network. Its entire run for the first season consists of 10 episodes, and it wrapped up on December 17, 2019. A “special preview” of the pilot aired on USA Network on September 24, 2019, before its premiere in October.
Season 1 opened to modest ratings but that was before its DVR release. The delayed views brought in massive viewership figures and has set up the stage for this series to follow the footsteps of ‘Suits’, USA’s other huge hit tv show, and become another smash-hit title from the network. Hence, we would not be surprised if USA Network, banking on its success, decides to renew the show for another season. And if things go according to plan, ‘Treadstone’ season 2 will most likely release sometime in October 2020.
